LIMA, Ohio (WLIO) - The Lima Symphony Orchestra is preparing for two candlelight concerts.
The orchestra will present “English Elegance” by Candlelight, a program celebrating traditional English music that blends classical and modern works. Featured classical selections include Henry Purcell’s “Dido’s Lament” and Edward Elgar’s “Nimrod” from Enigma Variations. Modern pieces on the program include John Lunn’s theme from “Downton Abbey” and Ralph Vaughan Williams’ “Fantasia on a Theme by Thomas Tallis.”
About 200 candles will be lit during each performance, a detail Orchestra CEO Elizabeth Brown-Ellis says adds to the beauty of the music.
"You're very close to the musicians, first of all. and being in that kind of intimate setting, it's very meditative to be that close and to be surrounded by the candles. It's very quiet. It's just a very... it's peaceful, and I think that's really a nice thing this time of year when you've been cooped up in the house for so long, just to have that moment," says Elizabeth Brown-Ellis, CEO, Lima Symphony Orchestra.
There will be two performances of the concert. The first is scheduled for Saturday, Jan. 31, at 7:30 p.m. at Trinity United Methodist Church in Lima. The second will take place Sunday, Feb. 1, at 4 p.m. at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Kalida. Tickets are available at limasymphony.com.
