LIMA, Ohio (WLIO) — For those looking for a meaningful way to give back, volunteering at Mercy Health–St. Rita’s Medical Center might be the perfect opportunity.

The hospital recently hosted a Lunch and Learn event for prospective volunteers, where attendees heard from current volunteers who have dedicated decades of service to supporting patients and staff. The event highlighted the wide range of roles available, including patient care support, clerical work, gift shop assistance and other essential services.

Attendees heard from current volunteers who have dedicated decades of service to supporting patients and staff.

Sheryl Dages, who has volunteered at St. Rita’s for 49 years, shared her personal experience and the impact volunteers can have on patients.

“The patients feel vulnerable, and they don’t know what will happen,” Dages said. “It’s so nice to be able to go and offer a hand massage or just greet them and make them feel welcome and calm. It’s a scary place. You only have to be on the other side once or twice to know how important it is to have someone come and just be a friend to you.”
