LIMA, Ohio (WLIO) - With the Labor Day holiday weekend underway, the Ohio State Highway Patrol is stepping up enforcement, focusing on impaired drivers.

The patrol began its holiday detail on Friday and will continue through the end of Labor Day on Monday. In addition to monitoring speeding, troopers will be working to remove drivers under the influence of alcohol or drugs from Ohio’s roadways. According to the Lima Post, there has been a recent increase in drivers arrested for operating a vehicle under the influence of marijuana. Troopers want motorists to understand there are serious legal consequences for driving impaired.

“Ultimately, if you do get arrested for driving while under the influence, you have a mandatory court appearance. After that, you face potential jail time, and then also, some significant fines... So again, it's not worth it,” says Lt. Nick Boes, Ohio State Highway Patrol, Lima Post.

Lt. Boes advised that if you plan to drink, arrange for a designated driver. He also suggested staying overnight with a friend or at a hotel.
