LIMA, Ohio (WLIO) — With Fat Tuesday approaching, one local bakery is preparing for its busiest day of the season as customers line up for a traditional Polish pastry.
Staff at Pat’s Donuts & Kreme have been working long hours to meet demand for paczki, the denser cousin of the doughnut. The pastry has Polish roots and was traditionally made to use up rich ingredients such as sugar, eggs and lard before the start of Lent.
In the United States, paczki are commonly eaten on Fat Tuesday and are typically filled with fruit jellies, creams and custards.
Bakery officials say Fat Tuesday brings a noticeable boost in business each year, with more customers stopping in specifically for the specialty treat.
“A lot of work our production crew, they are doing a wonderful job at making all of these. They are working long hours to get all these done for the public to enjoy,” said Erika Camara, supervisor at Pat’s Donuts & Kreme.
The bakery has received dozens of preorders for paczki but says a variety of flavors will be available for walk-in customers Tuesday while supplies last.
