LIMA, Ohio (WLIO) – Hundreds of senior citizens gathered on Tuesday for the annual Golden Age Day parties at the Allen County Fair, a long-standing tradition to honor fairgoers 60 years of age and older.

Those attending were treated to free gate admission until 6 p.m., along with music, games, and recognition for the oldest male and female, as well as the longest-married couple.

But for many, the day was less about recognition and more about reminiscing on their fondest memories of the Allen County Fair.

“When I was a kid, I used to show hogs and cattle, but the last 15 years, I was affiliated with the gospel singing tent,” said Gene Derringer.

George Aldrich recalled special concerts at the fair. “One of them was Vince Gill. Saw Vince Gill, saw a couple others, but I can't remember, of course, I don't remember what I had for breakfast.”

Otis and Jessie Pearson shared how the fair has become a cherished part of their lives. “We have been coming to the fair eating hamburgers at the stand over there for the last 30 years. We have enjoyed coming and meeting people that we've known and people that we are we are meeting. It's just good to be out here and mingle with the people.”

For Myra Aldrich, the simple moments stand out. “Just enjoy walking around and seeing what they have. You know, like watching them making, those big logs into things. And I enjoy watching them do that.”

Howard Lackey reflected on family memories. “Probably the greatest memories is when my wife and I came but then, she's been passed away for three years now.”

The fair’s week of celebrations continues Friday with Veterans Day. Veterans will receive free gate admission until 6 p.m., with a special program at noon followed by lunch at 12:30 p.m. in the big tent on the north side of the fairgrounds.

The Allen County Veterans Service Commission will also honor county Vietnam veterans with the “Ride With Honor” chartered bus to the fairgrounds, commemorating the 50th anniversary of the end of the Vietnam War.
