LIMA, Ohio (WLIO) – Earning the rank of Eagle Scout, the highest achievement in “Scouting America,” teaches young people the importance of giving back to their community.

To earn the honor, Scouts must complete 21 merit badges, demonstrate Scout spirit, show leadership, and finish an Eagle Scout service project. Two Eagle Scouts from Shawnee Troop 106 spoke about their projects Tuesday at the Lima Kiwanis Club.

Eagle Scout Noah Sims took an old run down area at Heritage Elementary School and turned it into a place students would want to go.“I did it because, first of all, my mom works there, so I get to see it all the time, and I saw how horrible it was. So when I was looking for a project, I thought it was perfect. I wanted to renovate it for the kids to be able to use. And something that I learned from it is how much of an impact I can have on people that I don’t even know, just from something that I’ve done. I think it’s really cool,” said Noah Sims, Eagle Scout, Shawnee Troop 106.

Daniel Schiel II just got his Eagle Scout rank Friday August 6th. He designed and built containers that people can use to retire an American Flag. “I looked around the Lima area and saw that there were no places to really take flags that needed retired that are worn, tattered or faded. So I created two boxes citizens can go and drop their old flags that we the scout troop 106, or other local veteran groups will be able to pick up and properly retire,” said Daniel Schiel II, Eagle Scout, Shawnee Troop 106.

One of the flag retirement boxes is located outside the Hugh Downs Auditorium at Shawnee High School. The Lima Kiwanis Club is a supporter of Shawnee Scout Troop 106.
