LIMA, Ohio (WLIO) – A group of middle school students from St. Gerard Catholic School is helping more than 300 seniors put food on their tables this Lenten season. The students are giving back to the community as part of their school’s recognition of Lent by doing good deeds.

On Thursday, the students spent their time packing senior boxes at the West Ohio Food Bank. Each student was responsible for packing specific food items, such as cereal, canned vegetables, and shelf-stable milk. The hands-on service project provided the students with an understanding of how their efforts would impact those in need.

"I really like it, because we're helping people in need with the food that they need help with, and we're packing up different kinds of foods that people might not have or need in their life," said Ciani Glenn, an eighth grader at St. Gerard's.

Julian Henderson, the Dean of Students at St. Gerard, expressed his pride in the students' work. "I'm extremely proud of our students. We work really hard in terms of extending grace to our kids, teaching them that, yes, there are times when you'll do right, there are times when you'll do wrong, but at all times, you can love thy neighbor, and you can love somebody else, and you can extend that to anyone."

This is just one of several service projects that St. Gerard students are participating in this week. While the middle school students were out in the community, younger students were involved in projects within the school. The week of service will conclude with a trip to Our Daily Bread Soup Kitchen.

The school’s efforts during the Lenten season highlight the importance of community service and giving back to those in need.
