LIMA, Ohio (WLIO) – A Republican state senator is looking to make the jump to Ohio treasurer in next year’s election.

Kristina Roegner has announced her candidacy for the treasurer’s seat. Roegner has served as an Ohio senator for seven years, during which time she helped end the state’s estate tax and is currently working on property tax reform.

She says that if elected treasurer, she wants to expand the state checkbook to include municipalities and schools, allowing taxpayers to see where their money is going. She also hopes to expand financial literacy efforts across Ohio.

“It's, I think it's so important that all citizens in our state, particularly younger people, as they're getting started, really understand the power of interest, compound interest, that can either work for you or can work against you, right? So, we don't want to build up a credit card debt, for example. So, I want to be very proactive there helping Ohioans,” said Kristina Roegner, Republican candidate for Ohio treasurer.

Roegner says she is proud to have supported legislation that allows more Ohioans to keep their hard-earned money starting next year.

“When I first took office, our income tax, we had nine brackets. It was over 7% income tax, and now we've reduced that. We're down to one bracket. We're going to have a flat tax in 2026 it'll be 2.75%. It's incredibly competitive. It tees us up very well as a state, to get to 0% in the next two years,” added Roegner.

Republicans Niraj Antani and Mike Zuren have also announced their candidacies for the Ohio treasurer’s seat.
