LIMA, OH (WLIO) - Using lawn and garden care products responsibly not only protects the environment but also ensures their effectiveness.

Experts want residents to be more cautious when using fertilizers, herbicides, and pesticides. Although these products can boost plant growth, if used incorrectly, could lead to contaminating water sources, harming aquatic life, and affecting drinking water supplies. By carefully reading and following product instructions, homeowners and farmers can apply the correct amount at the right time, reducing the risk of chemicals from entering the waterways.

"If you use too much fertilizer, too much pesticide, and too much herbicide that excess doesn't soak into the plant. It actually just flows off the road. It can go into the storm drain, and those storm drains go straight to our waterways, and they don't get cleaned first. Our fish, frogs, and drinking water do not want all of those chemicals in it, so using those instructions will actually give it the right amount to make sure that it's actually healthy for the plant," told Lydia Archambo, Stormwater Coordinator at the Allen Soil and Water Conservation District.
