Auglaize County officials promote safe drug disposal during take back day

ST. MARYS, OH (WLIO) - National Prescription Drug Take Back Day gave residents an opportunity to safely dispose of unused and expired medications while helping prevent misuse and accidental poisoning.

The initiative is held twice a year and brings together local agencies to address the risks associated with keeping old prescription drugs at home. Today, the Auglaize County Sheriff’s Office partnered with Grand Lake Health System to collect medications.

For those unable to come out, officials say there are still safe disposal options available year-round. The Sheriff’s Office and Joint Township Hospital both offer drop boxes where residents can turn in medications at their convenience.

“We have a drug take back box in our lobby, and our lobby is open 24/7 so anytime people have drugs, they can just bring them straight into our office and dispose of them there. We want to make sure that people are able to get rid of them in a safe fashion, and that we get rid of them so they don't fall under the wrong hands or potentially be abused,” says Michael Wiley, Auglaize County Sheriff’s Office.

The Auglaize County Sheriff’s Office reported collecting more than 340 pounds of prescription medication from residents last year, highlighting the community’s participation in keeping potentially harmful drugs out of circulation.
