NEW BREMEN, Ohio (WLIO) - With New Bremen High School’s prom taking place this weekend, the local emergency squad and fire department are teaming up to remind students of the importance of safe driving.

Mock crash reminds New Bremen students to drive smart

The scenario portrayed one student acting as though they had been drinking before getting behind the wheel, ultimately causing the crash.

First responders staged a mock accident involving two carloads of students. The scenario portrayed one student acting as though they had been drinking before getting behind the wheel, ultimately causing the crash.

The demonstration simulated the time it takes for emergency personnel to arrive on the scene and provide aid to those involved, offering a stark visual reminder of the potential consequences of impaired driving.

"We're gonna be teaching these kids the importance of not drinking and driving with prom coming up this weekend, it's always a good reminder to these kids that they're not invincible. They are humans, and the choices they make today will influence not only their lives, but other students and parents. We want to drive home the point that drinking and driving is not an option, texting and driving isn't an option. The single most dangerous thing that people do this age, is drive an automobile, and they need to take that very seriously. We hope that we can just do a small presentation to drive that home," said Phillip Grant, squad administrator with the New Bremen Emergency Squad.

As prom approaches, New Bremen’s first responders hope this powerful reminder sticks with students long after the weekend is over.
