WAPAKONETA, Ohio (WLIO) — Beanbags were flying at Wapakoneta High School as students with the Wapakoneta High School Octagon Club hosted a cornhole tournament to raise money for a local nonprofit.
Each spring, the club organizes a fundraiser to support a different organization. In recent years, the group hosted a movie night, but this year members decided to try something new by organizing their first cornhole tournament.
A total of 20 teams competed in the event. While the competition brought plenty of fun and friendly rivalry, the main goal was to support the Auglaize County Crisis Center, which assists families affected by domestic abuse and violence.
“We're excited to do stuff for the Auglaize County Crisis Center, because they're they do a lot of important stuff in our community, especially our schools and stuff. They help out a lot of people our age, and like students and kids our age. So, we're really excited to be putting our funds towards them and what they do. Well, I think it's really cool that everybody here is supporting the Auglaize County Crisis Center. And you know, I think it might get competitive, as you know it always does, but I think it's good to know that you know you're helping a good cause, and keep that in the back of your mind while you're playing,” says Drew Niekamp, President of the Wapakoneta High School Octagon Club.
The Octagon Club is affiliated with the Wapakoneta Breakfast Optimist Club. In the past, the student group has raised funds for several local organizations, including the Auglaize County Cancer Association, Generations of Love, and the Auglaize County Humane Society.
