LIMA, OH (WLIO) - The City of Lima getting a chance to try out a new product to brighten up street markers.

Thanks to a grant from Allen County Public Health, city crews have been replacing sharrows in several neighborhoods. The marking is to remind motorists and bicyclists that they are sharing the road on designated bike routes. The thermoplastic material is melted onto the pavement rather than painted to increase the life of the markings. The city and the health department have teamed up before with grant opportunities.

"Typically we've been installing bike racks with them, but when they approached us this year we took a look at our need and one of our needs was to refresh these sharrows, bike lane markings. And as we dug into it more we found a product that had thermoplastic markings and we were able to purchase those. And those should have a much longer life. We're going to be watching them over the next couple of years to see how they do," said Ian Kohli, City of Lima engineer.
The streets department is replacing a total of 50 sharrows in Lima neighborhoods.
