Durbin Bean Bake Labor Day tradition in Mercer County

As Labor Day traditions go, this one goes way back to the 19th century.

The Durbin Bean Bake first started on Labor Day in 1898 as a reunion of Civil War veterans.

Ever since then there’s been a free ham and bean supper for the veterans which has expanded to include the general public.

The beans are cooked in several pots and served up at the end of the day.

The money raised goes back into the event and for maintenance of the park.
