Eastern Shawnee Tribe Back in Ohio

The Eastern Shawnee Tribe has purchased 50 acres of land near Indian Lake, land they originally owned until they were relocated  in 1832. The land may soon be recognized federally as "Indian Country" (Land Owned currently and previously by the tribe), and could be the home of a family-style resort.

There is no word yet on what the land will be used for, but the Eastern Shawnee Tribe has several other facilities in Oklahoma and Missouri. Those facilities include banks, resorts, bingo halls and casinos. Located south of Indian Lake High School, off of State Route 235, a resort could result in $150-$200 million being brought into the area.

The Ohio Reservation Development Corp. is in the process of talking with residents and local officials. The Indian Lake Area Chamber of Commerce says, the area is constantly thriving, and a resort could be the next step.

The purchasing of land and building of a resort, would be the first re-establishment of the Eastern Shawnee Tribe in Ohio, since leaving.
