Election recap: State Issue 1 brought people to the polls

Incumbents held their seats and the Republicans won largely across the state but it may not have been party lines that nudged people to the polls for the midterm election.

According to Ohio Northern University Assoc. Professor of Public Relations and Media Studies Kathie Fleck, exit polls showed that State Issue 1 was a driving force that brought many to the polls so that they could voice their opposition to it. She says the unpopularity of the issue could have also had an effect on the results of the governor's race.

"Both Governor-elect [Mike] DeWine and Richard Cordray staked out pretty strong opinions for and against that particular issue and I think that if you look at how the counties lined up in terms of their support of that issue, that lines up with their support of candidate Cordray as well as Governor-elect DeWine."

DeWine received 50% of the vote with Richard Cordray trailing behind at 46%. For State Issue 1, 63% of voters said no.
