Findlay Post investigates life threatening crash on I-75 north of Bluffton

MT. CORY, OH (WLIO) - A 12-year-old girl was flown to a Toledo Hospital after a crash Saturday morning on i-75 north of Bluffton. According to Findlay's post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol, the crash happened just after 6 am. A tow truck was stopped in the left lane of the northbound lane with the lights flashing getting ready to tow a vehicle. When an SUV driven by 69-year-old John Scaccia of Dayton stuck the tow truck in the rear. The SUV caught fire, and Scaccia and 12-year-old Jessica Scaccia were removed from the vehicle. Both were taken to Blanchard Valley Hospital. Jessica was then flown to Lucas County Children’s Hospital with life-threatening injuries. The tow truck was not occupied at the time of the crash. The crash remains under investigation.

Union Township – The Findlay Patrol Post was investigating a non-injury crash on IR 75 southbound near mile post 148 at around 0602 hours. D & D Towing was stopped in the left lane on the northbound side of Interstate 75 to tow a vehicle from the scene with its flashing lights on. A 2024 Honda CRV, driven by 69-year-old, John Scaccia from Dayton Ohio, was traveling northbound on Interstate 75 in the left lane. The 202 4 Honda CRV struck the 2013 Ram tow truck in the rear, before coming to rest and caught on fire shortly after. The driver and right front passenger of the Honda were removed from the vehicle and taken to Blanchard Valley Hospital. 

The right front passenger of the Honda CRV, 12-year-old Jessica Scaccia of Dayton Ohio, was transported to Blanchard Valley Hospital, and then to Lucas County Children’s Hospital with life threatening injuries. The driver and passenger of the Honda CRV were both wearing their seatbelts at the time of the crash. The 2013 Dodge tow truck was unoccupied at the time of the crash. 

Interstate 75 northbound was reduced down to one at for several hours. Impairment is not a factor in this crash, and this crash remains under investigation.

The Ohio State Highway Patrol was assisted on scene by Mount Corey Fire and EMS, Bluffton Fire and EMS, Hanco EMS, Dick’s Towing, and Hess Towing.
