The State of Ohio’s fire marshal says they see the life-saving impact that smoke alarms have in the event of a fire. Working smoke alarms can cut your risk of dying in a house fire in half. Local fire officials say that you should check the alarm every month and change the batteries every 6 months. You should also have an alarm on each level of your home.

Lima Fire Department Fire Inspector Warren Pughsley adds, “Sometimes people have them outside their kitchen and they think that’s enough. But if you can’t hear it from the bedroom and the bedrooms are upstairs it doesn’t then it doesn’t make a difference. You need a smoke alarm upstairs if you have an upstairs, downstairs if you have a basement, and a garage if you have a garage.”

Pughsley says you should also have a carbon monoxide detector on each level of your home. It’s also a good idea to go over an escape plan with family members this weekend as well.
