ALLEN COUNTY, OH (WLIO) - The oncologists at the Mercy Health St. Rita's Cancer Center can help patients with many kinds of cancer - from those with skin cancer to patients with small brain lesions.

Growing STEM: radiation therapists helping patients at Mercy Health St. Rita's

Radiation therapy involves using high intensity radiation to treat patients, focusing the radiation on one local area to kill off cancer cells and avoid healthy tissue.

Located just across the street from the main hospital, those with the cancer center say that it's great to be able to help people in the community stay nearby while receiving treatment.

"Cancer does affect a lot of people in the community and families, so that’s something that really drew me in to radiation oncology, to help out those patients with an unfortunate diagnosis," said Dale Wurm, supervisor of radiation oncology at Mercy Health St. Rita's. "We do everything that we can here, and we have a great facility here, great equipment and technology so that the patient can stay close to home and get that type of treatment right here in their community."

Radiation therapy involves using high intensity radiation to treat patients, focusing the radiation on one local area to kill off cancer cells and avoid healthy tissue. If someone was interested in radiologic technology, there are a lot of options in that field.

"A lot of the radiation therapists start out as something like a x-ray tech, and in radiologic technology you can go to be an x-ray tech and that opens the field for multiple different choices," said Eddie Callahan, manager of radiation oncology at Mercy Health St. Rita's. "You could be an x-ray tech, you could be a CT tech, MRI, ultrasound, nuclear medicine. Once I got into radiology and that diagnosing and helping patients out, I really enjoyed that. When I got into the cancer service line I kind of just fell in love with the cancer patients and helping them out."
