HANCOCK COUNTY, Ohio (WLIO) — The Hancock County Sheriff’s Office is warning residents about phone scammers spoofing real numbers and claiming to be calling from the sheriff’s office.

The sheriff’s office says scammers are targeting residents by claiming a friend or family member has been arrested and needs money for bond or that someone failed to appear in court and must pay a fine.

The sheriff’s office reminds residents it will never call and request payment over the phone or electronically, including through gift cards, cryptocurrency or wire transfers.

Residents should never provide personal information or send money to these callers. Instead, hang up and contact the sheriff’s office at 419-422-2424 to verify the information.
