FINDLAY, Ohio (WLIO) — The University of Findlay’s Mazza Museum is celebrating a big birthday for the United States of America.

Thanks to a grant supporting America’s 250th celebration, the museum hosted a patriotic edition of its January Funday Sunday, featuring hands-on activities for children and families. Kids were able to express their creativity through art projects or visit the STEM lab to learn about virtual reality and explore states of matter through science experiments.

The Mazza Museum was founded to feature artwork from children’s books, and the event also included talks and readings from authors and illustrators. Organizers say the monthly Funday Sunday events are designed to create engaging, educational experiences for the whole family.

“This gets people into the museum learning intergenerationally. So we have grandparents learning with their grandchildren and parents learning with their kids. So it's a really a family event, which is amazing. And we love seeing that connection. We love having people here learning about books and getting into books and the art that's here, it's extremely important to us,” says Amanda Davidson-Johnston, assistant director of the Mazza Museum.

The Mazza Museum is home to the world’s largest collection of original artwork by children’s book illustrators. In honor of America’s 250th anniversary, the museum has unveiled a special exhibit highlighting the milestone.

“We also have a new gallery that's opening up America 250 it's called drawn together, and you can see that here at the museum and just having fun and learning about literature,” Davidson-Johnston adds.

The next Funday Sunday will be held Feb. 8 and will feature a visit from the Toledo Zoo. The event runs from 1 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. and will include animal-themed activities for families. Registration is available online at https://oilers.findlay.edu/pages/events/mazza-funday-sunday.
