Health officials say two different strains of the influenza virus have already been identified in Allen County. The two types reported can be prevented through the flu shot, so they encourage everyone to get the vaccination. The Allen County Health Department even offers flu vaccines for those who have no insurance or don't have the ability to pay. They say it's especially important now with the holidays right around the corner.
"It takes about two weeks for it to take effect and with the holidays coming up, people are going to be getting together, close quarters, so it's really an important time. Especially if you have infants that are under the age of six months that can't protect themselves. The best thing you can do for them is to make sure you have the flu shot," said Deb Hattery-Roberts with the health department.
Your Hometown Stations' photographer Phil Thomas even decided to get his flu shot this afternoon at the health department. You can learn more about the seasonal flu vaccine by visiting allencountypublichealth.org.
