Historic barn being reassembled for Swiss Community Historical Society's new center

BLUFFTON, OH (WLIO) - There are very few times that a person can put history back together, but a Bluffton area historical society is doing just that. The Swiss Community Historical Society is reassembling a 1860s barn, that someone gifted them for their new Heritage Center. The barn was taken down last year and stored, and when it is complete it will fit in with the rest of the structures on the farm. The home on the property and everything inside was restored to look like it did back in the 1843 era. With the addition of the barn, the historical society can further educate groups about what it was like to live in the mid-1800s.

“We have a lot of things in storage and the multipurpose Heritage Center which is going up is going to house a lot of those historical items,” says Chuck Niswander, Volunteer, at Swiss Community Historical Society. “It’s going to be a multipurpose building, where we will be able to do a better job of educating kids. The schools that come out here can do virtual experiences. That’s what we want to do with this building.”

Depending on the weather, the Historical Society would like to get the barn fully enclosed this year and then work can begin on the heritage center. They are hoping to have the project completed in May of 2024.
