LIMA, OHIO (WLIO) - It was a sea of pink around Mercy Health Saturday morning as they held their third annual “I Pink I Can” 5K.

I Pink I Can 5K raises awareness to breast cancer one step at time

Early detection is key to treating it, and events like the 5K are great ways to spread the message of people standing together against breast cancer.

Around 600 people walked or ran around St. Rita’s in honor of breast cancer awareness month. The American Cancer Society says over 310,000 cases of invasive breast cancer will be diagnosed in the United States in 2024, and around 42,000 women will lose their lives to the disease. But early detection is key to treating it, and events like the 5K are great ways to spread the message of people standing together against breast cancer.

“Inviting people here together it's a great opportunity for them to speak to one another. But we also have some educational tables set up to help people know what they really need to do to take their health into their own hands and make sure they are detecting breast cancer early so it can be treatable. You know October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and this has grown to be an event that people really look forward to. To see their friends and also get to show their support to one another,” says Ronda Lehman. President, Mercy Health—St. Rita’s.

Proctor & Gamble employees were also on hand, giving away free laundry detergent to the participants.
