CHICAGO, Illinois — Ohio House Speaker Matt Huffman (R) has been elected vice president of the National Conference of State Legislatures, a bipartisan organization serving the nation’s 7,386 state lawmakers and more than 30,000 legislative staff.
Huffman will serve one year as vice president, followed by a year as president-elect, and will become NCSL’s president at the 2028 Legislative Summit. NCSL’s presidency alternates between parties every year. Montana Senator Barry Usher (R) is NCSL’s current president, and Connecticut Senate Majority Leader Bob Duff (D) is the president-elect.
Huffman has been an active leader within NCSL, serving as an at-large member of the Executive Committee and participating in numerous initiatives that strengthen state legislatures and foster bipartisan collaboration among the states.

Huffman represents the 78th Ohio House District and resides in Lima. He was unanimously elected as Speaker of the Ohio House of Representatives for the 136th General Assembly after serving as Senate President in the 134th and 135th General Assemblies, making him the first and only person in Ohio history to serve consecutively as Senate President and Speaker of the Ohio House. During his extensive legislative career, he has championed efforts to reduce taxes, eliminate unnecessary government regulations, support small businesses and reform Ohio's medical delivery system.
Before joining the Ohio General Assembly, Huffman served on the Lima City Council from 1992 to 2006, including seven years as council president. An attorney for more than four decades, he practices law in his family's firm in Lima, where he has represented businesses and individuals throughout west-central Ohio.
A native of Lima, Huffman earned a bachelor's degree in government from the University of Notre Dame and a law degree from the University of Cincinnati College of Law. He and his wife, Sheryl, have four children, and 11 grandchildren – and are active in their community.
