RUSSELLS POINT, Ohio (WLIO) - Indian Lake boaters kicked off the boating season in a unique way this year. St. Mary’s of the Woods Catholic Church brought an ancient tradition to the lake with the Blessing of the Boats.

This marked the first year for the event, which also featured live music, food and refreshments for everyone in attendance.

The church’s pastor, along with several servers, stood atop the Sandy Beach Bridge and sprinkled holy water as boats passed beneath them, blessing each one for a safe and enjoyable season. "In the next few years, I'd love to be able to get the restaurants and the people from around the lake bring their food trucks make this just a wonderful family event for everybody, and just nice and relaxed. If God shines down continually with this nice weather, it's gonna be really fun in the years to come," said Lee Mccarty, member of St. Mary’s of the Woods Catholic Church.

As McCarty said, organizers hope to make this event a long-standing tradition at Indian Lake.
