LIMA, OHIO (WLIO) - It is a tradition that has been going on for over 100 years and teaches young women some very important skills.
Sales are getting ready to ramp up and will run until the beginning of March.
We are talking about Girl Scout Cookies. It is the largest girl-led business in the world. Sales are getting ready to ramp up and will run until the beginning of March. Each box of cookies sold helps troops pay for activities but teaches valuable life lessons too.
“Girls are learning things like goal setting, decision-making, and money management, which is really important in this day and age, that girls learn how to do financial literacy. All the proceeds do stay here local. A portion of it goes to the troops. So, the troops get to decide what they want to do with it, and a portion stays with their council for the upkeep of camps and council-sponsored programs and events and things like that,” says Amy Orwick, product program manager, Girl Scouts of Western Ohio.
The Girl Scouts have all your favorites this year, but there is one variety that will be gone after this year’s sale.
“The ‘Toast-Yay” variety, which is our French toast cookie. If that is your favorite, which is my favorite, this is the last year for it. So, stock up; they freeze great. But all of your core favorites are going to be there. Your Thin Mints, Peanut Butter Patties, Trefoils—all of those are sticking around,” adds Orwick.
Local Girl Scout troops will start sales at booth locations around mid-February. If you would like to order cookies but don’t know a girl scout, you can go to www.gswo.org, and the Western Ohio council will connect you to a troop in your area.
