Johnny Appleseed Metropolitan Park District visits Liberty Arts Magnet School

Kindergartners at Liberty Arts Magnet School got a special visit from scaly friends.

The Johnny Appleseed Metro Park District put on a nature program for the students, focusing on reptiles and amphibians. Students got the chance to look at and feel different skeletons, skins, and the real critters themselves. It's an exciting opportunity because it is not every day they get the chance to interact with animals like a Komodo dragon lizard and a snake.

"It's fantastic because most kindergartners, most people, never have the chance to see some of those animals up close," says JAMPD naturalist Beth Theisen. "And not only see them up close but actually touch them, which is great fun."

If you want to see some friendly critters for yourself or just learn more about the nature around us, the parks will hold the first Family Nature Exploration of the summer on Saturday, June 2, 2018 at the Ottawa Metro Park Campground from 10 am to noon.
