LIMA, Ohio (WLIO) -Â The City of Lima Public Works Department encouraged people to keep an eye on their catch basins to help keep rain water out of the streets.
Catch basins, also referred to as storm drains and storm inlets, are drains found on the sides of the road that allow water to enter the city's storm sewer system.
Stormwater Engineer Dakota Gray said people can help the city by cleaning debris off any catch basins they see.
Clay added that clogged catch basins can cause water to pool and flood, which can affect not only the roads, but nearby homes as well.
"The storm sewer system is designed to capture and intercept the water that comes off of rooftops and the street itself," said Clay.
"When those catch basins are not cleared, it allows that water to pool and to flood, which can then affect homes, roads, and other infrastructure. By keeping those catch basins cleared, it allows the storm sewer system to do what it's designed to do."
Clay said reports about damaged basins can be sent to limaohio.gov.
