Keep your dog away from turkey bones

Gathering for a Thanksgiving meal is a great time for family and friends, but make sure your dog is not getting into something that they shouldn’t.

All the delicious food that you are looking forward to on Thursday could have some ill effects on your pet. So make sure you tell your guests before you eat, not to feed any table food to your dog and make sure the turkey bones are in a place where your dog can not get to them.

"Turkey bones and chicken bones and things like that splinter very easily. So when they are chewing them up they can splinter, they could damage the mouth, the esophagus, it could cause a lot of damage. So make sure it’s disposed of properly, in a container or something that they can not get to it. And all of that spicy food, and even gravy is so good for us, but it can be very bad for the dogs system. It doesn’t matter if it’s a large dog or a small dog, they all can be toxic to your dogs," explained Allen County Dog Warden, Julie Shellhammer.

With extra people in your home for the holiday could add some stress to your dog, so Shellhammer suggests maybe putting your dog in a crate or a room away from the guests. But if you want to introduce your pet to the people in your home do it in a way that they don’t get scared and accidentally bite someone.
