Land record scam circulating Allen County

The Allen County Recorder is warning folks about a land records scam.

Recorder Mona Losh has issued an alert saying a deed solicitation letter is popping up in mail boxes stating people must obtain a deed for their homes at a cost of anywhere between $79 and $99. Residents made Losh aware when they realized the price was outrageously high. She said it isn't necessary to pay these excessively high prices for land records. Should you need a land record, you can go to the recorder's office and purchase a copy for five cents a page. Losh said a new law will go into effect in the next few months to combat these scams.

"I think it should stop because it's basically going to say on there if you buy the deed here it's ten cents, if you buy it from them it's $90," said Losh. "Most people are smart enough to take the ten cents. They're going to know it's a ripoff and not to do it."

Losh said this issue has gone on for years. She said this new law will require documents to state that it is a solicitation or that business will face a fine.
