WAPAKONETA, OH (WLIO) - Several area law enforcement agencies and Wapakoneta residents came together Friday morning to say their final goodbyes to a beloved retired Wapakoneta Police Department K-9.
As a way to honor the life, legacy, and impact of their four-legged partner, K-9 Rico was greeted and visited one last time by his family of fellow police brothers and sisters as well as residents inside Wapakoneta City Council Chambers. Recently, Rico's health has deteriorated, and a difficult decision was made to peacefully put Rico to sleep to ease his pain and suffering. Through his incredible career, Rico helped to protect Wapakoneta, but also, he has touched the lives and hearts of everyone around him.
"I tell you, I don't know if I could ever work this street and not have a dog because it's just weird like, you always have that person that has your back. You can lean on them. Not only with me, it's just... I think when you are here and you can see how people like it's a flood of emotions for a lot of people that have worked with him, and he is a really friendly dog... he made you acknowledge him. He was a really good employee and brought a lot of people's spirits up," says Joseph Welker, Patrolman and Rico's K-9 Handler, Wapakoneta Police Department.
After everyone said their goodbyes, Rico was escorted by an honorary procession.
