Leaves plug sewer drains, causing problems in Lima

With all of the recent rain we’ve had, the City of Lima Public Works Department is busy unplugging storm sewer lines.

Not everybody’s leaves got picked up this fall and as a result some of them ended up in the storm sewer.

As you can imagine, the problem can result in localized flooding of city streets but as Storm Water Manager Joe Gearing says, it could become a bigger issue.

“It ends up being a big nuisance for us. It creates localized flooding not only on top of the structure, but if it gets into the structure it will create blockage in the pipe and we then we got to go ahead and pull a whole crew on that and address it then,” said Gearing,

Gearing says they would like city residents to clear the storm drains and remove leaves or other debris that might block the flow of water into the sewers.
