The Senate Committee on Environment and Public Works unanimously approved legislation that would help clean up the Great Lakes.
The America's Water Infrastructure Act of 2018 would provide resources to upgrade water infrastructure around the country, including increasing resources to protect Lake Erie and the other Great Lakes while conserving fish and wildlife populations. Senator Rob Portman says the legislation would go a long way to protect one of our state and country's most important assets.
"Sometimes you think, well, not many members represent Great Lakes so people don't understand it's significance but it's the greatest freshwater bodies in the world," says Portman. "We got to protect it and, frankly, we've got some challenges right now with Lake Erie with the algal blooms, which are toxic, with the invasive species coming in, so we got to do what we can to protect it.
The legislation will not wait for action on the Senate floor.
