Wednesday night's storms could be the cause of a morning fire in American Township.
American Township fire officials say they were called out to 49 Beaumont Place just after 7:30 Thursday morning where they found the back of the house fully engulfed in flames. The two people who were home at the time of the fire were able to get out safely. After getting the fire under control, the residents told fire officials they believed lighting struck the home Wednesday night and some electronic devices started smoking. They shut off the breakers last night and the fire started shortly after they turned them back on this morning.
The back half of the home had heavy fire damage, and the rest of the house had heavy smoke damage. Fire officials have not ruled out lightning as the cause of the fire.
