Earlier this year, one city council member proposed the idea of a landlord rental registry. Now she says she's open to other options.
Third ward city council member Carla Thompson initially presented the idea as a way to hold landlords and tenants accountable. She believes it would be the solution to vacant and dilapidated housing, but, not all her constituents believe this is the best option. So Monday she and other members of the economic and community development committee reviewed the city's property maintenance code to see what rules are currently in place. After reviewing the code, Thompson says she still feels like the registry is the best option.
“Nobody has brought forth anything to me saying okay this is another way that we can do these internal inspections in a safe and efficient manner without it being on the tenants,” said Thompson.
Once Thompson completes her committee report she plans to take it to her fellow council members to take a vote.
