After Wednesday night's meeting, the Economic and Community Development Committee said they are still unsure about the idea of a rental licensing system.

In December of 2018, committee chair Carla Thompson proposed the idea of a rental licensing system as a way to not only protect tenants and hold landlords responsible but to also help assist landlords with their properties.

If implemented, landlords would be assessed a fee and this is something her fellow council members believe could be a huge burden. They believe enforcing current code is a better option. Despite their views, Thompson said she believes the committee is capable of coming up with a joint solution soon.

“My hope is that we’ll come to a compromise of something that we can do to actually make sure that our residents have safe housing and make sure that landlords are renting quality homes,” said Thompson.

The Economic and Community Development Committee will be meeting with the rest of city council to discuss the best option for tenants and their landlords in the next couple of weeks.
