One local non-profit known for helping men in need is offering even more help as the region enters into day two of sub-zero temperatures.
On an average night, Lima Rescue Mission houses close to 20 men, but on this freezing January day, the director said he expects even more.
“Last night we were actually at capacity, but if we get too many guys we will just put mattresses on the floor in the waiting room and accommodate them,” said Chuck Ferguson, Lima Rescue Mission executive director.
Since 1906, the faith-based shelter on Wayne Street has not only provided hundreds of men in need a place to stay but for many, it has become a church home.
Throughout their stay here, residents attend church and go through a series of faith-based courses, which organizers believe will help the men get back on their feet.
One resident said he is grateful for the church service and support because it has helped motivate him to get his life back on track.
“When I first got here this was the first place I came to come up,” said Sylvester Carrington, Lima Rescue Mission resident. “It’s been an inviting place to be. This is my lowest part in life right now, but I’ll be coming up pretty soon.”
One local organization that volunteers at the shelter said they enjoy helping those in need because it aligns with their mission.
“We try to spread the word of God to everyone and I feel like serving people is a part of that,” said Amelia Page, Columbus Grove Fellowship of Christian Athletes volunteer.
Overall, Ferguson says he hopes the relationship residents build with god will help them ultimately lead better lives.
“The reasons people get homeless and then stay homeless is values and lifestyle,” said Ferguson. “So we think the bible has the answer and the relationship with the Lord has an answer because it can transform your life if you get to know him personally.”
Men in need who are looking for a place to stay are encouraged to call the shelter at 419-224-6961.
