Local veterans head for D.C. Honor Flight

Sixteen local veterans and five guardians took off Monday afternoon for their Honor Flight trip to Washington D.C.

The group headed off for Toledo and was accompanied by a police escort as well as a group of motorcycle riders. The flight will leave for the nation's capital on Tuesday. Mike Melvin, the Lima representative for the Flag City Honor Flight says that this is a once-in-a-lifetime chance for some of these veterans and that the community played a big part in them being able to take this trip.

"We wouldn’t be going on this trip if it wasn’t for the Lima community, the VFW 1275, Marshall Allstate Insurance, the S.O.S. Project," Melvin said. "I know that I get all the accolades, but I’m just one man, and without the Lima area community, this trip would not be possible."

The veterans will be returning from their trip on Wednesday, October 3rd, arriving at the Allentown Road Walmart around 12:30 p.m.
