LIMA, Ohio (WLIO) — The nation paused Tuesday to remember the service and sacrifice of those who have worn the uniform of the United States military.
The origins of the holiday trace back to the armistice that ended World War I. It was the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month in 1918 when the fighting ceased, a moment that would later be commemorated as Armistice Day. The day became a legal holiday in 1938 and was renamed Veterans Day in 1954 by President Dwight D. Eisenhower to honor veterans of all wars.
One of the many local observances took place at Elida Middle School, where students welcomed their special guests — the family members, friends and community members who have served. The veterans were recognized during a school program and given the opportunity to share their service experiences.

Jordan Davison, a U.S. Navy veteran and former Naval Corpsman specializing in combat medicine, reflected on his nearly decade-long career.
“My time in the service, it was I spent nine years in traveled around to a lot of countries, even in the States, I've been to a few different states and different duty stations. Mason, he was with me for a majority of it.”
For his son, eighth grader Jeremy Davison, the ceremony was both personal and inspiring.
“The best part about it is that I get to know that my parents helped keep the country great and protected.”
Vietnam veteran Denny Glenn said the recognition is meaningful, especially for those who served during eras when returning home did not always come with appreciation.
“It takes a lot for somebody to stand up and say, hey, I'll serve now, and I'll go protect my people, my country and and when they do that and they come home, we need to say, thank you. Lesson learned from Vietnam era.”
Following the program, veterans and students gathered in the school commons to enjoy refreshments and time together, continuing the tradition of honoring service, sacrifice and the generations who have defended the nation.
