A group of mothers in Ada are doing their part to make schools a safer place for their children.
Kristin Purdy, Hillary Buxton, and Amanda Henson came together after a dinner conversation to create "Boots for Bulldogs". The three aims to raise money to equip all doors in Ada Schools with "The Boot". It's a security device that prevents an intruder from entering a room. Installed in seconds, all it requires is a metal plate inserted into peg holes in the floor. As of last week, the women raised $11,450 of their $44,000 goal. They have been using word of mouth and their Facebook page to reach that goal.
"Then we got on the topic of school safety, you know different threats and school shootings and everything else. So we wanted to try to think of a way that as moms what can we do to make our school even safer than it already is," said Kristin Purdy.
Recent events sparked the motivation for the mothers.
"It was important because it came up with my daughter. She was out of school for a couple days with the Florida shooting. When we were talking, we said we had to do something and it really hits home," said Hillary Buxton.
"When we were little all we had to worry about were tornado drills. That was the most negative thing we had to worry about. Now our children have to worry about is there going to be a bomb threat? Is there going to be a shooter?" asked Amanda Henson.
Donations can be written to the Military Order of the Purple Heart with "Boots for Bulldogs" in the memo line.
