LIMA, Ohio (WLIO) - The Northwest Ohio Amateur Radio Club (NWOARC) focused on skill, service, and science with the National Amateur Radio Field Day.

The club showcased multiple temporary amateur radio stations (ham radio stations) to communicate globally with other radio operators participating in the field day. Attendees showed off the skill of setting up ham radio stations and its uses in emergency situations. Club members said ham radio stations allow for communication during disasters and other emergencies.

"Field day is just an opportunity for amateur radio operators to test their equipment out in different environments. They operate on different battery packs and anything like that to test their equipment and to see how prepared they are for any emergencies," said Ashley Brockert, treasurer for the NWOARC.

"It is a great opportunity for youth and adults to get into ham radio so we're not relying on phone lines when emergencies do happen. It's been a couple years that we've had multiple instances where we've used ham radio as a way for communication when phone lines have been down."

The field day continues until Sunday at 8 a.m. At the New Hope Christian Center. Van Wert Amateur Radio Club will be hosting their 39th annual "Hamfest" on July 19 at the Van Wert County Fairgrounds.
