State Issue One was put on by a citizens group to change the process of redistricting map drawing in Ohio from a group of elected state officials to a citizens panel that would be made up of 15 people that would draw the political boundaries for Ohio congressional, State Senate, and State House seats.

The Ohio Republican Party says this statewide issue is being backed by outside interests and is not good for the state.

"This is an effort really by special interest groups to get a group of unelected, unaccountable bureaucrats to draw the lines in a way that would help one party win. The Ohio Supreme Court recently ruled that this could reasonably be called gerrymandering. It would require line drawer to consider the partisan makeup of districts, that is by definition gerrymandering. So, if you are an Independent, you are not considered; if you are Libertarian, you are not being considered in this process," says Alex Triantafilou, Ohio Republican Party Chairman.
