Oliphant shooter gets 18 years to life for murder

The shooter in the Damere Oliphant murder was sentenced Monday in Allen County Common Pleas Court.

Judge Jeffrey Reed sentenced 20-year-old Gavin Lauck to 18 years to life in prison for the crime. Lauck was one of three men that were charged in the deadly shooting. They told the court he was on marijuana, cocaine, and Xanax at the time of the shooting.

Prosecutors say Lauck, Colin Dysert, and Dalton Duncan were running after Oliphant who allegedly took off with drugs that Dysert had.

"This is a terribly unfortunate situation that a life was lost in our community over drugs once again,” says Allen County Assistant Prosecutor Kenneth Sturgill. “We have seen the combination of guns and drugs and it results in death in our community to many times. This defendant decided it was worth it over a small amount of marijuana and pills, to fire shots at an individual who was running away with them, I guess and kill them."

Colin Dysert was already sentenced to 15 years in prison on kidnapping and involuntary manslaughter charges.  Dalton Duncan will be sentenced in May on a kidnapping charge.
