OTTAWA, Ohio (WLIO) - Ottawa Missionary Church took their message outside to reach out to their community.

Families were encouraged to bring lawn chairs to enjoy an outdoor church service led by worship artist Phil Clum.  Children were also encouraged to bring swimsuits and enjoy the park's splash pad afterwards. Volunteers  said the outdoor service helped them connect with their community and try to grow interest in the church.

"Our church is a small church, and we're trying to reach out to community members," said Connie Morrison, deacon on the church board. "We'd like to get more people interested, more people to know about our service, what we do, and what we believe."

The service focused on the importance of a name, and how a name is associated with the work someone does. Pastor Rennie Burrus wanted to remind people on how their actions reflect their character.

"It goes back to the very name of our church. When you say those words, what comes to people's minds because of the way you represent yourself and the way our church represents itself. What thoughts, what images, what kinds of things come to mind when you say those words," said Burrus.

The service was followed by a picnic open to the whole community. The church will host a sing-along on July 19.
