OTTAWA, Ohio (WLIO) — The Putnam County Sheriff’s Office is warning the public about a phone scam involving someone impersonating a deputy in an attempt to obtain personal information or money.

In a Facebook post, the sheriff’s office said it has received numerous complaints about the scam. The caller claims to be Deputy James Spencer and tells victims they have either missed jury duty or that a family member has an active warrant and money is needed to post bond. The sheriff’s office said no one by that name works for the agency and deputies would never call residents about missed jury duty or request money to post bond for a warrant.

Officials are reminding the public not to share personal information with anyone until their identity can be verified. Residents are encouraged to hang up and contact the agency or department directly if they receive a suspicious call.
