RTA holds first of three public hearings to keep transit authority afloat

One of three public hearings on public transit took place today regarding a levy vote placed on the November ballot.

The authority has lost two federal grants in 2016 leaving a deficit in its funding.

Within the last few months, the RTA's board voted to request a levy tax of 0.25% which will cover their costs plus allow them to fix sidewalks, and bike lanes. If the levy does not pass they will have to reduce services and costs over a period of phases.

The first would included eliminating Saturday services and the second phase would be getting rid of evening services.

The director of the Allen County Regional Transit Authority says it is likely the authority will begin laying off drivers as a result of the cuts.

The other two public hearings are scheduled for Wednesday, October 25th at the Bradfield Center at 3 p.m. and Thursday, November 2 at 6 p.m. at the RTA administrative building. Anyone is invited, and encouraged to give their input.
