Rules of the Road Part 3 - Funerals

Rushing to and from our daily destinations, many things slow us down; emergency vehicles, school buses and long, slow funeral processions.

You're driving down the road when you see it up ahead, a line of cars with waving purple and white flags. It's a funeral procession, but what do you do? Under Chapter 4511, Section 451 of the Ohio Revised Code, "Operators of all vehicles shall yield the right of way to each vehicle that is part of a funeral procession."

Acting as the funeral escort, for Chiles-Laman Funeral Home, Ken Lamb leads a procession through the intersection of Bellefontaine and Elm street. While everyone obeyed the law during the procession, Lamb says there have been times when people have tried to pass him, resulting in him pulling them over.

Many drivers we talked with pulled over out of respect for the deceased and the family. Linda Geiger waited for the procession to pass, something she stresses to her daughter. As President of Chiles-Laman Funeral Homes, Bob Laman sees area drivers like Geiger pulling over all the time, something he's proud of.

After years of driving, many people get set in their ways and forget what the actual laws are, so here's a brief recap. 1.) When you see an emergency vehicle or funeral procession coming at you or up behind you, pull off and stop on the right hand side of the road. 2.) When approaching a school bus slowing down with flashing lights, remember to stop a safe distance from the bus.Â
