LIMA, OH (WLIO) - Students at South Science and Technology Magnet are getting some hands-on learning in music this week.

South Science students use sampling techniques to put their own beat on Halloween music

Sounds and beats from songs such as Michael Jackson's "Thriller," Andrew Gold's "Spooky Scary Skeletons," and others were used.

Students from the Lima Senior's audio engineering program have been visiting this week to work with students from South Science and Technology Magnet to create their own Halloween songs by using sampling techniques. Students take parts of existing audio and piece them together to create their own new compositions and sounds. The songs were Halloween-themed, so sounds and beats such as Michael Jackson's "Thriller," Andrew Gold's "Spooky Scary Skeletons," and others were used.

For the audio engineering students, music is about self-expression, and what better way to express yourself than creating your own unique sound?

"It makes me feel happy because I've always loved working with kids, but also I like seeing people find an interest in what they're doing, and especially with music; that's something that you can really express yourself with, and it has a lot of individuality with it. So when kids can come and they have their assignment, I tell them, 'No, do it how you want to do it, how you like to hear it.' And just connecting with them makes me happy; it really does," commented Saniya Harvey, a junior at Lima Senior High School.
