COLUMBUS, Ohio (WLIO) — Ohio lawmakers have approved $40 million in funding to help the state’s police, fire and EMS personnel receive treatment for post-traumatic stress disorder.

Gov. Mike DeWine signed the funding into law last week, and it is scheduled to take effect March 18. The state fund will cover mental health treatment for peace officers, firefighters and EMS personnel in need of care.

Ohio approves $40M to Support First Responder PTSD Treatment

First responders routinely face traumatic events and high-stress situations that can take a toll on their mental health. Many also deal with staffing shortages, burnout and long shifts, which can further contribute to the problem.

Ohio Association of Professional Fire Fighters President Jon Harvey said the funding represents a significant breakthrough for first responders who have long struggled to access job-related PTSD treatment.
